Via Raiz

We're so excited to share with you Jennifer Bolanos the amazing woman behind Via Raiz and the upcoming event she'll be having at our space!  Get to know her and learn about why she's creating such a beautiful celebration for us to all enjoy!

Tell us about yourself.
My name is Jennifer and I'm an SF native who now calls Portland home. I'm a daughter of immigrants. I'm proud of my roots and celebrate two cultures. I am my ancestors wildest dreams.

What the backstory is behind Via Raiz and why you started this shop?
I've always had a love for Mexican craft. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of the family trips to the artisan villages in my parents home state of Michoacán. These memories and my cultural upbringing are truly the roots of this concept.
Vía Raíz is an homage to my heritage. It has become a way to connect with my origins and share the love for my culture with the world. I feel very honored to have the opportunity to create a space that allows people to discover the brilliant talent and incredible craftsmanship that can be found in Mexico.

How do you source or find/choose the artists that you feature and sell? What sets them apart.
I'm so inspired by this new generation of designers, in Mexico, who are embracing their roots and infusing their designs with centuries old traditions. Not only are they playing a special role in rescuing these traditions but by refining the craft and elevating the level of quality and sophistication, it allows them to help the artisans expand their reach, thus allowing the artisans' craft to be recognized globally.
The designers I collaborate with are all very well-known designers in Mexico and showcase their pieces at very important  design events and markets that are taking place in Mexico City. I've been fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend these events and discover brilliant talent.
Tell us about Dia de Los Muertos and why did you decide to host this event?
Día de los Muertos is a celebration that dates back to the Aztecs. Indigenous people believed life and death were one big cycle so people never really went away, they just went to inhabit a different place. This celebration is about honoring our ancestors and passing on family stories, or ancient stories, to the next generation to continue the legacy. It is not about mourning; it's a remembrance, a celebration of life, and a reflection on mortality.
One of the things I miss most about living in the Bay Area is the celebration of cultural events. Now, as the owner of a business that celebrates Mexico, I want to share this beloved celebration with the Portland community.
I feel it's important to showcase and celebrate the beauty of Mexico in a moment in time when there is so much negativity surrounding our relationship with our neighboring country.
This is also a earthquake relief benefit for Mexico with 100% of raffle ticket sales going to Project Paz.  What are some ways that money will help?
As the plans for the Día de los Muertos event starting taking form, Mexico was hit with 2 major earthquakes. I wanted to find a way to support the earthquake relief efforts in Mexico. If I was already working on gathering the community to celebrate Día de los Muertos with Vía Raíz, why not use this event to come together with the community to help Mexico.
Project Paz has partnered with El Paso Community Foundation to help victims of the earthquakes in Chiapas, Oaxaca, Mexico City, Morelos, Puebla, and Estado de Mexico. They're working with various organizations in Mexico, including Fondo Unido México, Fundación Comunitaria de Oaxaca and Programa Companeros, through its Red de Coaliciones Comunitarias de Mexico. The money will be used to aid rebuilding efforts in the effected areas.
What can people expect on the day of the event?
The most important element for a Día de los Muertos celebration is the altar. Together with Fieldwork Flowers, we'll be creating a gorgeous altar inspired by the coming together of Mexico and the Pacific Northwest. We invite all guests to bring a photo of a loved one, who has passed away, to place at the altar.
Food, in any Mexican celebration is ever-present. We're partnering with our friends at Chuparrosa who will be making pan de muerto, Mexican hot chocolate, and Champurrado (a traditional Mexican chocolate drink is thickened with pinole (ground maize flour) and spices).
We love the girls behind Letra Chueca Press and have so much respect for the work that they do. We're so excited to have them at the event with a really fun and poignant hands-on letterpress project that all our guests will be able to participate in.
We're hosting a raffle valued at over $2,000 to raise money for Mexico. We will have all the raffle items at the event so everyone will have a chance to see the entire prize.
What are you hoping people will take from their evening with us?
I'm really excited to have people experiencing this beautiful holiday and celebration and taking part in it. I hope they potentially leave with having had a new experience, whether that be, celebrating Día de los Muertos, seeing an altar, or tasting pan de muerto o champurrado for the first time. Overall, I hope they leave with a feeling of connectedness.
Anything else?
As I continue into the next chapter of my business I want to continue to create events and gatherings that celebrate Mexico and its traditions. I'd love to hear from the Portland community what they would love to take away from these experiences.
