Meet Adam from Adamjk

Most of you know him already and those of you who don't well now you do! He's someone who has inspired so many through his illustrative work that straight up hits us deep in our soul. He's real, honest, funny and tells it how it is while having a way of making us feel like we're not alone. We absolutely love Adam and so excited that he was able to share a some things about himself in this interview!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I'm Adam J. Kurtz (aka @adamjk) an artist and author based in Brooklyn, NY. I'm from Toronto, I talk about my feelings a lot, and run my own studio producing my books, product line, and a range of client projects.

Three things you need for a productive day.
Natural light, a coffee, to go outside at least once.

What do you consider a wasted life?
No doing that one thing you know you really want for yourself but for some reason continue to not work towards.

What has had the biggest impact on your political beliefs?
Just knowing people, both in person and online, that come from completely different backgrounds. Once you know people and their specific issues to be real, it's really hard to ignore them. Unless you're a fucking asshole.

What do you attribute the biggest successes in your life to? How about your largest failures?
Both are rooted in my own choices, whether it's a choice to act (or not) or just a string of decisions that brought me to the right (or wrong) place at the right (or still wrong) time.

What events led to creating Things are What You Make of Them?
Things Are What You Make of Them was really a product of my gradual transition from working in creative office environments to doing my own thing. Lessons learned along the way over about two years that slowly took shape, became individual short written essays, and then eventually felt like they deserved their own home to live in. Things Are is that home, and I'm sharing all the anecdotal learning about how I dealt with the emotional side of being my own thing, taking risks, searching for a voice, finding meaning in my work, and sharing it with others (especially in the crowded online space).

What are your next steps?
If I knew, maybe I'd be better able to plan! I'm focusing on growing in different directions as a person and as a creative so that I'm ready for the next opportunities as they come. While also focusing on continuing to release my own work, to speak directly and intimately with others, and doing what I can to represent who and what I am for others who might find parallels to their own journey.
